Earth Science Topics of Interest?
-
Tell us what topics you are interested in building lessons around!
-
@Infiniscope-Team Coastal erosion and land loss in Louisiana. Very unique to one area of the country, but a topic which doesn't have a significant online presence for educators.
-
@John-Dupuis Ah yes! You emailed me about something related to VFT's. Was it Dino Doom?
-
@Jessica-Swann Yes, the goal is to model this project in the style and sophistication of Dino Doom

@Sian-Proctor I've been on my Oceanography unit in Environmental Science, for an interesting and interactive activity using a good bit of technology check out Virtual Oceanography https://s3.amazonaws.com/nstacontent/tst1804novdec_24.pdf?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAIMRSQAV7P6X4QIKQ&Expires=1542865301&Signature=MMbju878T5wYuC4pjfrKRVZ7JtM%3D from the latest NSTA Journal for HS teachers (not sure what level you are looking for right now), but I would be very interested in developing an Oceanography activity for Infiniscope using the Smart Sparrow platform.

Mineral Identification and the Rock Cycle ... anything to make these exciting.
-
@Natasha-Rabinowitz You could build something that students could do before the Red Rock lesson. I tested that lesson out, it was a good reinforcement to rocks. But I would love to have a lesson for minerals too.

Hi,
I'm getting some spectrometers from the Lunar and Planetary Institute. I would like to do some Mars analog soil samples. -
@Gary-Bodman Have you looked into simulants? https://www.themartiangarden.com/
-
@John-Dupuis Here are some possible visualizations you might be able to use: https://science.nasa.gov/earth-science/oceanography/oceans-interactive
-
As I thought about the Red Rock lesson, I would love to have a section on the landscapes or geography of Mars. I'm thinking of connecting this to our Rover we are building at school. I would like to try to create a lesson integrating both of these topics. Geography and Rovers ( include the physics).

@John-Dupuis So Google Earth has a feature where you can view the historical imagery (as in the past 2 decades) and a measuring tool. It is cool to see before and after large events, such as Katrina. I have had students measure this.

@Sian-Proctor the E/V Nautilus (https://nautiluslive.org/tech/ev-nautilus)field season will begin in May. Teachers and informal educators may request ship to shore interactions with scientists aboard the ship. Also, Ocean Exploration Trust has wonderful resources for K-12 teachers (https://www.oceanexplorationtrust.org/).
-
@Sian-Proctor I would love to collaborate on this topic. Which unit are you interested in? I am open to looking at all aspects of physical, chemical oceanography. Maybe areas related to data analysis within the scope of oceanic and atmospheric coupling

@Susan-Groff Hydrothermal vents and archea research.
